We were paid to write this blog post. That's right, paid. Our bias has been disclosed. With that revelation out of the way, let's move on with the show...
Many of you have surely heard about blog advertising site PayPerPost. PayPerPost allows bloggers to make a few bucks by blogging about a product, service, or another website. The only problem (according to many) is that PayPerPost does not require the blogger to disclose the fact that the post was paid for. And they also require that the post be more or less positive in nature about the reviewed product or service. Needless to say, this opens the door for some questionable ethics.
Enter ReviewMe. ReviewMe has the potential to turn the whole "let me pay you to blog about my schtick" thing upside down. We just set up an account to see what all the fuss was about, and for kicks and grins, ReviewMe is offering the handful of bloggers who sign up early cash to blog about their own service. It's rather brilliant when you think about it.
So here we are, making a few bucks to tell you about ReviewMe. So what makes ReviewMe more appropriate than PayPerPost? Well, for starters they require you to disclose that you're being paid for a given post, hence our opening paragraph above. For seconds, your post is not required to be positive. They'll let you write whatever the hey you want, so long as you're on topic. Finally, your post must be at least 200 words long.
ReviewMe is extraordinarily easy to setup and use, and they say payouts range from $20 to $500 per post, depending on your blog traffic, Alexa rank, feed traffic, etc. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the concept, my guess is that they're here to stay. It's a slick service, and while not a fit for everybody, a good handful of bloggers will definitely take a close look at it.
We certainly won't be turning Sparkplug into an informercial. We make our money in other ways. Hopefully you won't think we've jumped the shark by taking the money and running. Really, we couldn't help it. ReviewMe makes it too easy. Really though, I want to know what everyone else thinks about this. Is it right? Wrong? Who cares? Any way you slice it, it's very interesting indeed.

As long as those rules are enforced, it sounds all right to me. One potential problem I see is that ReviewMe and services like it could potentially become tools of swaying online conversation artificially toward or away from certain topics - which in itself could be deceptive. Still, at *least* there's a requirement for disclosure and the flexibility to say what you want on the specified topic.

ReviewMe seems to be offering good payouts and has the potential to be quite lucrative for some blogs. However, it depends on the focus of your blog and I would be reluctant to make every article a review (even assuming I get offered any reviews ;-)). I like the disclosure rule. It's an honest approach to the pay-per-blog concept.

ReviewMe still runs the risk of cluttering the blogosphere even more, but at least the clutter is disclosed as clutter, and not passed off as real journalism. In this regard, I think ReviewMe could be very popular.

The problem with ReviewMe is that the name is deceptive. It should be "PressReleaseMe" or "BuzzMe." It might work well to provide impressions of web2.0 online services, but it doesn't work for complex software or hardware because there's no way a reviewer can obtain a copy/unit and review it within 48 hours.

Sounds interesting, but what if you really don't like what you're supposed to be reviewing? I think you'd still feel pressure to go with something positive. Afterall, someone is paying about $250 for the review and if you totally slammed the product... I don't know... I guess that's the chance they take, do they just want the link?

I suppose any publicity is good publicity to some companies.
The blogger in me thinks it would be cool to get paid to blog (and I tried a similar service and got paid $10 for a post once).
But the blog reader in me just doesn't like the idea. Not that the reviews won't be truthful, but just knowing the whole reason a post exists is because the blogger was paid for it makes it of less value in my eyes.
What I like about good blogs are that the author him/herself has an eye for what's truly blogworthy, rather than what's "priced right." However, if written cleverly and if it ties in to your audience, I think it could work well for bloggers and readers. Only time will tell :-)

I would caution you when looking into these types of services, whether you are a blogger or an advertiser.
Search engines can spot patterns and Google has its own spam team headed by Matt Cutts, and they are continually tweaking their search engine algorithms to devalue links they suspect are sponsored, manipulated, traded or otherwise intended to inflate link popularity beyond what is natural / objective linking.
What I've noticed is that many blogs exist now purely to write reviews. They'll review dog food in one post and Caribbean villas in the next. They display "Review Me $20" and "PayPerPost" prominently in their sidebars. The proportion of paid posts vs. regular posts is highly unbalanced.
The links you pay for are at high risk for becoming devalued by search engines (this is not the same as a penalty). The only reason you should engage in pay per post is if the readership of the blog is highly topical, and the blog has a loyal following that will actually send you CONVERTING TRAFFIC. In fact, you should never buy a link simply for search engine benefit. Assume the link will give you no benefit, does the traffic justify the price? Then go for it.
I will admit when PayPerPost came out, I did experiment with the program. After ordering 5 blog post reviews from various publishers, I will never do it ever, ever again. The posts were low quality and I spent a lot of time tracking down bloggers because they linked using the wrong urls, spelled the client's name wrong, etc.
What bothers me the most about Pay Per Post is now blogging is going to become more spammy, if I see one more PayPerPost badge on a blog, I'm gonna yak. We need the WC3 in on this :D
