IconBuffet Spout Off

2006 March 28 by Josh

Comment Icon 345 Comments

I signed up for IconBuffet Free Delivery and all I got was this lousy Taipei Monkey. Alright, at the risk of further ruffling more feathers, we'd like to know your favorite—and least favorite—icons from IconBuffet Free Delivery. Additionally, weigh in on what icons you're more likely, or less likely, to use in a project. This could be fun... and controversial. Oooooh! Hey, if anything, it'll help us know what you'd like to see more of in the future. We release at least four new free collections each month, so that's a chunk of icons waiting to be designed.

Miko Walczuk says

I really dig the Oslo set out of the free deliveries. Would definitely use that in a project. It's tough to say what I wouldn't use, especially since each project is different (and the icons free ;). I could use any one. The icons are all great.

If I had to choose one, the Shanghai is --- *cowers in corner*

Nate says

I like the Tower Grove sets, but I don't like the Taipei Buddies at all. Oslo is my favorite of the studios, with all the pretty, clean icons they put out.

Trey Piepmeier says

Favorite/most likely to use: Marseilles Cafe
Least favorite: any of the Taipei

I also really dig all of the Tower Grove sets.

Rob O'Rourke says

They're all top quality. My favourite is definitely Modena Simbolo though, clean and simple.

Nice one Josh

Chick Azul says

I really like both Shanghai Smilies and Tech, and I guess my least favorite is Dresden Tournament, just because I can't really what I would use it for.

Keep up the good work guys, the icons are great quality

Shari says

The sets that have been most helpful are the Oslo and Manhattan sets. Shanghai Tech has come in handy every now and then. I can see where the Modena Simbolo, Marseilles Cafe, Durango Research, and even Dresden Tournament would be useful, though I don't have those yet.

Least useful: Taipei anything, Tower Grove Melee and Shanghai Smilies.

I do like the Tower Grove Melee set. The artwork is great, I just can't see where I'd use it.

FWIW, I for one am grateful for these beautiful icons at such a fantastic price, even the ones I think I can't use, because the day may come when they'll be the perfect thing. I won't say no to any of these.

How sad that somebody got nasty over your wonderful free icons!

Jono says

My favourites - Manhattan Night Life, Marseilles Cafe, Both Oslo's.

I'd use any of the above in a project (if there was ever a need to have icons of rainbows or coffee cups!

taipei are definitely my least favourite set.

Although the icons are great, it would be nice if you gave away a set of more 'useful' icons - edit, save, arrows, that kind of thing... They'd go down a storm I bet.

Thanks for the icons to date - sterling work!

Inspired Dziner says

My favourite by far is Oslo. They in a league of their own (imho!)... Not too keen on dresden... but any resources that are graciously given away for free are fabulous. Thanks for all the great icons.

Chris Harrison says

Best Icons ... hmm ... I'd lean towards icon sets like Oslo Atmosphere, Oslo Finance, Marseilles Cafe, Tower Grove Melee, and Tower Grove Promenade.

Worst Icons ... If it's got Taipei in the title... (sorry guys) Your other work is a lot better than these icon sets.

I think the IBFD is an awesome idea, and I've enjoyed trading sets with the guys over at http://www.godbit.com and with colleagues in the area. Thanks for sharing with us, and allowing us to share your great work with others.

Novak says

Love the pallette and style of Marseilles, Manhattan, Tower Grove, and Oslo. Would love to see some Kyoto freebies. And while we're pie-in-the-sky-ing, Marseilles CMS, Kyoto CMS, or Oslo CMS would be awesome sets to have.

Not a fan of the "flatter" designs: Helsinki, Halifax, Durango, etc. And maybe I'm too much of a Westerner, but Shanghai and Taipei aren't rocking my world.

Thanks for all the hard work, and the free stuff.

Terry Tolleson says

The Oslo sets are at the top of the list for me. These icons are unique and seem to lend themselves for a fresh look for any project. I am mostly sold on the one-of-a-kind design of the icons. I don't think I have seen a set presented as they are. The design is sublime and the choice of imagery nicely refreshing.

Manhatten NIghtlife was extremely popular when released and they -are- very nice icons, but they seem "done". The images, colors and "mood" of the Tower Grove sets and Marseilles Cafe really tell a story and I would love to see these icons in use for an online, browser-based game.

Taipei Buddies 1/2 are the worst offered from the service. There is still a warm place in my heart for traditional, old-school, pixel icons, but these are not welcome. Taipei Night Market is the only one, out of all the Taipeis, that I find moderately appealing.

I feel it absolutely necessary to mention that Shanghai Tech Vector is my favorite non-icon Free Delivery. I really dig ya'lls vector sets and getting a free one was more than the proverbial "icing on the cake".

Finally, keep up the exceptional work! Free Delivery is a stroke of genius and will (and does) help many fledgling web designers get something up that has a consistent and clean look should they use iconography in the design. Aside from actual commercial (or non-commercial) use, these icons are fun and gorgeous to just have. Any icon aficionado would love to have any of these sets.

Travis Schmeisser says

Not really digging any in the Taipei sets, but blown away by Oslo. Beautiful!

Steven R. says

Would love to see more of the Oslo, Manhattan & Marseilles series.

Josh Williams says

Alright, I take it we're going to bury the Taipei style for a while. I'll try not to cry too much. I, personally, liked the monkeys.

Mike G says

Of course, Oslo is the best set out all the sets. the monkeys are sweet, but some people may not like pixel look of them. Any chance of designing them like the Tower Groove icons? But my favorite is Farewell Snow, I have them all over my desktop. Least favorite is Helsinki Hi-Fi.

Josh says

I like TowerGrove series the best, they put out a lot of nice, clean looking icons. I don't particularly like Shanghai Tech Vector.

Ben says

I like the Taipei series a lot, as they are really useful for providing avatars on forums. I'm not such a fan of the Oslo sets or Shanghai Tech Vector.

Josh Williams says

Alright! Someone weighs in for Taipei -- at least its not a total waste. ;-) Thanks for letting us know Ben.

Silvercat says

Most likely to use (and also my favorites) : Marseilles, Manhattan, Oslo and Tower Grove series.

These sets are simply beautiful, even if I don't have any real reason tu use them at this moment.

I don't really like the Taipei series, but it's not a question of quality. These icons are also excellent, but are just useless for me.

Anyway, thanks a lot to all the IB team for giving us those great icons :)

Kevin

Jacques Marneweck says

My least favourites are the Taipei series, Helsinki Hi-Fi and Modena. I like the Tower Grove, Shanghai, Manhattan Night Life and Marseilles Cafe.

vuong says

Love the color scheme of Marseilles. Farewell Snow is very cute. Love them 2nd. Don't like the Shanghai series because I think aqua icon style is getting old. Something about them colors. The Taipei series already recieved dozens of trashing; other than the small shirts, the rest of Taipei look average. Maybe because of the bold color schemes, red and yellow i.e.

Manhattan Metroplex should have been named as Manhattan machines, unless metroplex means space crafts and not living quarters.

vuong says

Sorry for taking up another post. What do you think about arrows? Streamlined, elegant, arrows in the style and pallette of Marseilles Cafe?

Thanks for the IBFD eye candies.

I'll sit down now.

John Marstall says

Actually, vuong, Metroplex refers to the futuristic city in which the Manhattan machines do their commuting. I got the idea after a visit to the Dallas-Fort Worth area (known as "the Metroplex") where traffic is packed but everyone drives around like they're playing F-Zero.

Presumably the Manhattan Metroplex is built over modern-day New York, though. :)

Peace JD says

I like Oslo, Manhattan, and Marseilles. They're sharp-looking, intuitive, and just the right creamy textures to go with the look of the site I want to build.

Peace JD says

Sorry to go twice, but I forgot my least favorite.

So count me among the less-enamored of Taipei, and although not as much, of Shanghai, too: too 'Mysterious East' for me. I'll always appreciate the goodness of a Free Delivery, but I'm a sucker for texture, dimension, and good ole drop shadowing.

Derek Lakin says

I love the style of the Marseilles Cafe set, but unless I do a website for a cofee shop I guess I'm unlikely to use them commercially.

Like just about everyone else the Oslo sets are really good and probably most likely to be used in a project (especially the Finance set). The Shanghai Tech and Smilies are great too and also have potential for use in a project and Helsinki Hi-Fi is a great style, but again unlikley to be used in a project unless a music site comes along.

As for ones I don't like I'm with everyone else in not really liking the Taipei sets. I don't like the style or the subjects for any of those sets, sorry.

Oh and Manhattan Metroplex are just plain cool!

David says

Love Shanghai Tech Vector (would love more vector images) and would like more in the style of Manhattan Night Life (I actually use those the most often)

Haven't yet found a use for any of the Taipai sets. Sorry.

Kevin says

Love Dresden Tournament and the Tower Grove Sets. I have to say that the Taipei sets are probably my least favorites (although I do like the monkeys) -- they just don't seem as easy to find a use for.

sirmmo says

I really love Tower Grove / Marseille cafe (for the design) and the Oslo sets... :D

Faith says

I think the Taipei monkeys are my favorite! The night market set is great, too!

Tom says

I like the clear crisp designs of the Manhattan, tower grove and Marseilles icons, farewell snow is pretty cute as well!

paul says

people shouldn't complain about free shit.

that's like telling your grandmother you hate the knit sweater she made for you on christmas day (and possibly throwing it at her).

out of the icon sets i've PURCHASED though, i like alexandria the best since it's clean and simple.

Martin says

kill the monkey, it's letting the side down, otherwise, excellent work!

Jon says

Oslo is by far the best style, Marseilles and Tower Grove are also favorites.

Shanghai and Modena look like they were just thrown together.. I guess I just don't like the thick black lines.

I like Taipei Monkey and Night Market, but I have no idea what to use them for.

Martin says

kill the monkey, it's letting the side down, otherwise, excellent work!

Kate Bolin says

Oh God, what would I do without my Taipei Monkeys?

Taylor says

Easter was way lame.

Yannick says

Favourite: Oslo and Marseilles (tie) :)
Least Favourite: Taipei Monkeys

Keep up the good work guys.

Yannick says

Keep up the good work guys.

Dustin Boston says

Dude, the Taipei Buddies set works great for avatars! They are the perfect fit for the new version of Google Talk.

Just thought I'd help you out on that one Josh ;) And maybe that will give you a little marketing creativity for the Taipei sets in the future. I really didn't know what to do with them before today...

Great work though, on all the icons. They're really fantastic.

Harris Reynolds says

Manhattan Night Life Rulz, The Shanghai Smiles... YUCK! :-)

Mark Bell says

Oslo, anyday. Simply wonderful.

Joe North says

I love the sets that have a very specific theme, like Melee, Finance, Cafe, Hi-Fi, and Night Life. Stylistically, I think they are all great.

I would stay away from the more generic icons in my projects. You need hundreds to make them useful - but that's what your stock icons are for. Keep the free deliveries simple and specific!

Thanks for all the great work

Deb says

I think the program you have set up is GREAT! What a super way to get your product out and you have some great stuff. I agree w/those that say the freebie ones are pretty much "project specific" as you'd have to have just the right project to use them for.

I'd also love to have some really nice "generic" icons - the home/eMail/arrows/contact - the ones that are most used on a web site and could be used on just about *any* web site.

I purchased a couple of the ones on sale and one or two of the $19.95 sets and like them very much and soooooo much appreciate the bargain price :) As much as I'd LOVE to have some of the higher priced sets, financially it's out of the question for me so a really good sale on these would also be appreciated. I'm sure the higher priced ones are worth every penny you charge for them, they're just out of my price range.

Dump the monkies! These remind me of pinball and other games, not icons for web sites. Personally, I think directing your efforts to generic icons that are usable just about anywhere will go a long way for your business well over and above the project specific variety. More common-use blog/CMS icons would also be appreciated.

Keep up the good work and the innovative ideas for getting your product out and providing great things to web designers for their web sites at reasonable prices.

Deb

el mono bolo says

The Oslo sets are my favorites without a doubt, then comes Manhattan. The ugliest I think are the Shanghai icons, what's up with the fat borders?

I actually like Taipei Monkey! Maybe it's because my nickname is el mono (the monkey) and I'm thinking of using them in my future website, but they're not THAT bad either. Dresden is one set I will never find a use for..

Anyhoo thanks for the icons! Keep 'em coming and I might buy a set once I have the money and a need for a big set.

miklb says

I'll echo the sentiment that the taipei series, is the one I'd be least likely to use, but having them in the bag can never hurt.
And that's my perspective in general to all the icons, though some of the icons are theme specific, it's nice to have them in the tool box.
If you are looking for specific styles I'd like to see more of, the durango and helsinki fit my eye quite well. I'd also like to see some "micronic" ;-) icons in the mix. Some basic grey scale "blog" icons would be sweet.

maddchatter says

I don't know if you have one,I haven't seen it but would love a coin collection (gold coins)
aka maddchatter

Stuart Welwood says

I can't imagine using any of the free icons in a real application for business use - they're just too geeky and not very descriptive.

Zoion says

I heart monkey.

Zoion says

I heart monkey.

Zoion says

Oops! IE was giving me a timeout. Sorry.

Robbie says

I used to dislike the Taipei icons a lot, but now I've thought of something I could use them in, I've grown a liking for them. :) To be honest, I like all of the icons, but I'd have to say the Manhattan ones are my favourite.

kayloe says

The free delivery icons are great. I don't have a favourite - and I don't dislike any of them. I can see the value of all the design sets and *maybe* one day I will use them in a site. But, I do prefer to create my own, so they kinda serve more as inspiration at the moment!

On another note, the forum swapmeet has proven to be more fun than I anticipated. Every person who has shared icons with me has been very friendly and appreciative. And that's probably because they are getting something really cool for free. These forums represent what I think the web should be about: community, collaboration and shared ideals. A bit utopian, I know, but hey - in this day and age you have to be positive about something!

Thanks for developing such a great idea!

maush says

How can you say no to a monkey?

Joshua Jarman says

Your icons are beautiful and I certainly appreciate the free samples that can be used in real projects!

THANK YOU!!!

I realize some of the reasons for the randomization of the free sample deliveries, but this thread got me thinking.

Suggestion:
What if a user could rank them, and leave a comment/feedback about each of the freely offered sets? Then in exchange for their personal and valuable feedback they had the option of receiving them in the order of their preference. Give a little take a little.

Suggestion #2:
I'd like to see at least one practical web set, that had things like email envelope, a globe, a blog calander, feedback speech bubble, etc.

Suggestion #3:
A micro monochrome set.

Suggestion #4:
One or two mixed "grab-bag" sets that include one icon each from of the popular sets not currently offered free. Wet our appitites!

The reason I took the time to leave my feedback is you took the time to give me some free icons, and obviously respect your users and their business.

I'd like to see more business adopt the ideas and practices that you pull off so well.

Kind Regards and Many Thanks!

Christian Montoya says

Huh, the only icons I've used in a project yet were Taipei! They happened to be very fitting. You can see it here: http://www.foxymcloud.com

But my favorites are:

FAREWELL SNOW
and stuff from Oslo and Manhattan

MALLOW is my LEAST favorite. Really not that attractive or useful. :(

Anyway keep up the good work guys, I love the icons!

manuka says

I had a look at the site listed in the post above ^ and those icons now remind me of Paul Frank t-shirts. Gave me the shudders - but I love a good pixel push, so they're kinda ok anyway.

*that's all*

Digimon Fan says

I hate that! If I wanted pixel icons I'd make them myself. Why go back years, when you can make beautifull Windows XP and Windows Vista icons?!

vuong says

I got Mallow this week and somehow I have to rescind my previous post about Taipei series as my least favorite.

Mallow Buzz #1 now resides as the least-favorite.

Bob says

While all the icons are nice I can't use most if not all that I've seen so far for a 'professional' web site. Granted my site does need to be rebuilt and when I find the time I will do so. But as a developer of applications I need a more professional icon. Don't get me wrong, these are great for many applications but not for the ones I'm working on.

Trisha Watts says

Okay, here goes...
I love Manhattan Night Life, and the Oslo series. Marseilles Cafe and manhattan Night Life are going to be implemented on my blog just 'cause they are fun and/or fit the color scheme. The Oslo Finance set is already in use there.
Taipei anything...YUCK!!!!
I DID buy 2 sets that I think can be recolorized nicely for 2 sites that I am working on right now and I had no problem since they were on sale at less than $20. Is there ever a prayer of catching Manhattan on sale like that?

Thanks for the forums too I have made a great friend over there :)

Chef says

I like the Taipei Night Market and Buddies 2 sets, but Taipei Monkey and Buddies 1 look awful, which is a bit depressing because I live in Taipei. I agree that the Taipei Night Market icons are hard to find a use for though.

Oh well.

Nick Bramwell says

I like Oslo best (especially finance), however I'm not keen on any of the Taipei. Free Delivery is great, I'm looking forward to using the icons.

JB says

I love the Tower Grove sets - I'd really like to see an RPG oriented Tower Grove, kind of like Melee, with potions, weapons, spells and the like.

Micah Z says

I agree with JB, Tower Grove RPG set would be awesome.

Anyhow, so far I've liked all of your icons and have been using some of them in various php scripts I've been working on.

However, like most people, I do have my favorites. Namely Marseilles Cafe because the color scheme is awesome and the Tower Grove series because I have plans on using them in a php-based rpg I'm working on.

EOTSMedia says

I like the Shanghai, Taipei, Manhattan and now the Mallow series. These work better with my design style and they are fun and spunky like icons should be.

Ben says

Je seriously love the Dresden style.

vihugo says

I love Tower Grove Promenade best. Although I am not starting a project right now I am really appreciate this cool design. I am still looking for icons which dealing with persons like the one I like so much. Would like to see more of this.

Thanks for all your effort!!

solidus says

Heh, Tower Grove RPG is a *fantastic* idea :) Oslo is easily my fave, with Tower Grove and Modena coming in close second. Farewell Snow is great as well.

I think that the Taipei style is cute, but I can't imagine finding a use for any of them.

One thing that I think could be better is the fact that once you've run out of deliveries for a set, that's it, for ever it seems. I for one am hoarding a little because I don't want to totally run out of deliveries of anything, knowing that I'll never get any more. Maybe that's just me, but is there any chance that can change?

Keep up the great work, Free Delivery is a wonderful thing :)

seiten says

The Oslo series is just slick :) I would use them in the weather & finance sections of newspapers.

The Tower Groove series is perfect for a community. Farewell Snow is cute but cannot think of any use for the set.

I just cannot dig the Taipei ones, though some icons from Taipei Monkeys and Taipei Night Market are nice.

I think the new Mallow Buzz sets could be of some use, but in general most of the sets are more on the cute side than the practical side.

Not that I'm complaining, though! I'm quite happy collecting them all ;)

Andrea says

Manhattan, Marseilles

Nadim says

Mallow Buzz 2 and Montgomery rock.
I don't really like the taipei series, they're OK though.

Bob says

Too expensive.

maz says

i love the shangi tech ones
not really likeing the tapei sets maybe its because of the name!

Marc says

"How can you say no to a monkey"

No, monkey, NO! BAAAD Monkey!

Don't you know, you've got to shock the monkey.

Favs:
All time would have to be [strong]Oslo Finance[/strong] for practical reasons (all Oslo are gorgeous, but what are ya gonna DO with peeps or an egg with stars on it?)

[strong]Marseilles Cafe[/strong] is gorgeous, again -- but again, not practical, for me. Pretty to look at, tho'

[strong]Durango[/strong] is excellent for flat, low tone graphics. Very sharp, precise, to the point.

[strong]Blink Sale[/strong] is also pretty, and practical. I can see using that on the computer or on a website.

[strong]Modena[/strong] is interesting... in a 3-d metalic kind of way.

Even tho' I mention "practical" above, I don't really DO anything that "needs" them... I just collect them because they are cool. I have used a couple on the computer, but I get such variation, and have so many programs/documents, that I wind up having to search for stuff... I haven't gotten used to any of them.

Marc says

Aw shucks... maybe I didn't use the tags correctly for the list. Oh Well!

POPOEVER says

I prefer the Blinksale!

Angel~ says

Good morning! I have taken a liking to Dresden Tourney and Shanghai Smilies... since I'm so new, I like them all just yet. Thanks for the creations!
Angel~

Mario says

I love the Tower Grove and Oslo sets the most.

sandee says

some really nice work here. I do have some personal preferences, but project styles vary so it really depends.

personal faves: Oslo, Kyoto sets
also: Modena, Manhattan, Anaheim, Dresden sets

not so much: anything pixelated on purpose. monkeys of any sort in avatars or icons. Specifically, I don't care much for Shanghai, Montgomery or Taipei. Especially those monkey ones.

Overall I'm liking this service very much. I've made a couple of purchases, the ones I really like are a bit dear for me though! Keep up the good work!

sandee says

hmm. Did I sound harsh? Hope not. I really love the service and think your icons are great. In fact, I really like most of the designs, just not sure where I might use some of them. (ie. love Tower Grove, but don't know what to do with it!

Perhaps another poll asking for a dozen items to be 'iconized'? I'd love to see a practical web set, (sitemap, email, download, home, print, shop, contact...) but I guess (some of) those are reserved for the paid sets?

Matheus says

Favorites / Would likely use on projects: Marseilles Cafe and Oslo sets. They're beautifully designed and focused on themes.

Least favorites / Would most likely not use on projects: Any of the Taipei sets. They're ugly and pretty much unscoped.

Martin says

I love the Tower Grove sets, especially TG Melee, though I don't like the Taipei sets. Modena and Oslo comes right after Tower Grove on the list.

- Martin

Werner Hartnagel says

Hello,

i found the Tapai Monkey's horrible & useless. But i'm happy never got it until now :)

I'm looking for Icons useable on Websites or Applications, the Monkey's may be only useable in Games ;)

However, the most Icons are fine!

Thanks,
Werner

bborgg says

I like the oslo and manhattan series, as well as Durango and Dresden. Taipei just doesn't do it for me. I would never use icons like that in any professional website. I'm also groovin' to Modena.

Sarah says

I love the Oslo sets, and the Taipei sets are in second place. While their usefulness may be questionable, I love the design.

Sara says

My favourite is "Taipei Monkey" because I love monkeys. All monkeys.
Least favorite: "Mallow Buzz". They look too heavy.

Galen says

In my opinion the Manhattan series are by far the most elegant of all the icons. I find the Modena, Shanghai and Taipei sets pretty awful—sorry but you did ask for people's feedback : )

It would be great to see a set that combined the Manhattan UM and Manhattan sets with, for example, sizes 12 and 32 of all unique icons in the two sets to give a truly comprehensive set of icons for user interfaces.

Keep up the great work. The concept of free delivery is fantastic!!

Ahh the joy of having roommates.
I've had plenty of
[url=http://coomahalig.info/houston-roommate.htm]houston roommate[/url]. From living with a stripper, to living with an alcoholic and a pot head, to living with another alcoholic and a coworker. For instance, the other day I came home to find the sliding door cracked open, beer cans all over the kitchen counter, and one of the chairs flipped upside down, leaning against the couch. It was like the Hulk had come through and had a party.
So I wanna know, what stories do you have of past and present roommates?
tl;dr HULK SMASH!
