Hey hey! Been a while since a rootkit post. Looks like its time for all of us who purchased malware last year from Sony BMG to cash in. Behold: The Sony BMG Rootkit Settlement. Oooooooh... If you, or someone you know purchased any of these CDs last year, you're eligible for a replacement CD as well as one of the following:
1) $7.50 cash plus one free iTunes album download
- or -
2) Three free iTunes album downloads
Yes folks, it's time to cash in. Personally, I'm opting to go with the "three album downloads from iTunes" just to force Sony to give me something via the iTunes Music Store. How's that for poetic justice? However, if you opt to go with the cash, just remember that we still have I Heart Rootkit t-shirts on sale.
So, what is Sony going to send you?

Update: The form was pretty straightforward. I have my pre-paid shipping label ready (of course I'm not going to pay for it myself... why is that even an option?), and my infected music is on its way back to Sony. Of course, I burned it to iTunes (on the Mac) long before now. Won't miss it in the interim. Plus, now I'll get three free albums from Sony's (mostly) worthless only catalog. I was justthisclose to having them gift me Marc Anthony's self-titled debut. Alas, looks like Acceptance is the best thing on the list. Nice.

You know, man, I'm thinking of hitting some place like CD Warehouse, picking up a bunch of these suckers for $5, and returning 3 or 4 of each title to Sony, just cos...

Well good. The fact that it's a settlement and they are giving compensation definitely shows they're guilty.
However there are a couple of points. There is no info on what happens if you live outside the US (were infected CDs distributed there?), and if you're a Mac user, and are therefore only affected by MediaMax, you don't get the CD replacement option.
Also, some CDs in Europe used Macrovision CDS-200 software, and there is no mention of that either.
Final point: from SunnComms' web site, their lists of possible infected CDs, and those listed by Sony, don't tie up with the list that is on the SunnComm Ask an Expert page

Sorry for the accidental double post above.
There is one more thought I had.
For all these free albums Sony is giving away, are they still going to pay the royalties to the artists involved, or are they effectively going to pirate their own artists?
