Friends of Firewheel know we've been down on Sony as of late. We even printed some t-shirts. But it wasn't always this way. I used to be a huge Sony fan. I believed their consumer electronics were bar-none the best. Their design was superior, and their products were quality.
Then somewhere along the way Sony fell off the track. Or perhaps they just started sniffing their own crap too much. Sony's problems go far beyond the Rootkit hoo-hah. Sony's downfall will be (er, is) their delusional mindset that people love them because the are Sony. While Sony enjoyed this success for much of the past 20 years, this is no longer true.
My admiration for Sony centered around a couple key product lines: The Walkman was the music player of choice. Sony used to make the best TVs out there (Trinitron used to be a big deal). And the Playstation and PS2 ushered Sony to new heights as an entertainment powerhouse. Walkmans, TVs, and Playstations. My guess is that most consumers out there equate Sony with these same products.
Unfortunately (for Sony), they seem to have bought into the idea that because these products were once great, that they WILL BE great into infinium. This is a deadly mindset for a company, and Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi is the blind champion of this mindset.
The iPod took the music player title from Sony some time ago, and Samsung (along with TI's DLP technology) is beating the pants off of Sony's TVs. It won't be long for the Playstation now. Upon hearing Krazy Ken's pronouncement that they're going to hoc the PS3 for $600+, I sold my PS2 and all my games, and promptly reinvested into an XBOX 360. No thank you, Ken.
And a few days ago, I took my last vestige of Sony, my PSP—bought a little over a year ago, and traded it straight up for a new Nintendo DS lite. I couldn't be happier. The DS is better in almost every way, has much better games, and is less expensive in the long run.
I know the Playstation platform will continue to have its fans. Sony won't die. Some folks still like to write code in COBOL too. But Sony's days at the top of consumer entertainment and electronics are numbered (if not already over). Will somebody please let Ken know?
I've now weeded Sony from my life. I wonder how many others are doing the same.

Well, I've got a Sony DV camcorder I'm happy with, and it was very affordable. I also own a pair of Sony earbuds that I bought about ten years ago, and yet they still work better than my iPod earbuds.
Other than that, I've never been a Sony fan for much of anything. So, there's not really anything to "weed out" but rather "not invest in."

The DS Lite, is without doubt, the best hand-held gaming platform I've ever played. It doesn't try to be more than it is (ie plays movies, music, be a *phone*, etc) is small, light weight and solidly made. The original DS was great, but the Lite is head and shoulders above it. For the money and the range and quality of games, there really is no comparison between it and the PSP. IMHO.

The only Sony products in my life at the moment are games. I doubt I'll sell the PS2, since I'm sure I'll need my Katamari fix now and then. But going forward, it's XBox and Nintendo DS/Wii all the way.

In the interest of full disclosure I should say that I still have an old Sony CD player that is still rocking, but I doubt CD players are going be a big cash cow anymore. Even though they still make some other items (like cameras as Rob mentions), they are no longer a clear leader anywhere.
Ged: I am totally enthralled with the DS Lite. It's like a mini MacBook. I traded my PSP and games straight up for the DS Lite, four games, and $3.50 in change. You can't beat that at all. As "cool" as the PSP was, it's not remotely as much fun.
Dave: Katamari is a great game. I can see how that would be missed. But as soon as I learned Lumines would be available on XBOX Live Arcade later this summer, I boxed up the PSP. That was the only game holding me back.

I just recently bought a Sony 5.1 mega-pixel camera. I had been shopping around and finding similar features on several cameras in the same category as mine. I settled on the Sony with the lower price. But I did have a second or third thought about it just before laying down the credit card, mostly because the name Sony was on the item. But I'm really happy with the camera and I'm glad I chose this one.
But aside from cameras, I really don't think I can buy Sony products anymore. There is no way I'm spending $600+ on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is the only logical choice now, so I might as well eBay my PS2 and games. I already sold my PSP on eBay about a month after buying it. I was frustrated with the lack of WiFi ability, and the overall disappointment that many have experienced after the hype settled. And even if I had thoughts about actually spending two car payments on a PS3, I would still have to expect some disappointment from that as well. I can't imagine it stacking up next to the Xbox 360, especially after Microsoft will have had so much of a head start on Sony working out the bugs and offering upgrades and enhancements that will make the 360 even better.
Aside from the possible camera here and there, I'm also done with Sony.

The engineering on the DS Lite is incredible. The white glossy finish is very Apple-esque. Kinda makes me think I should get a DS stand or something to showcase its beauty.
For the longest time I've avoided picking up the Xbox 360 for the sole reason of it being crafted by Microsoft. However, I'm tempted to dust off the PS2, list it on eBay, and reinvest in a 360. That will mark the end my relationship with Sony. Woohoo, that means I'll be part of the Sans-Sony club!

I still have my old Trinitron, and have actually bought no less than 2 MiniDisc players/recorders (and one, I'm ashamed to admit, somewhat recently). But Sony has definitely lost both their reputation for quality and any connection with what users really want. The PSP and PS3 are the best examples. The DS Lite is the most fun I've had gaming in years.

Nintendo might lag behind in this so-called console war, but they long nailed the concept of "gaming=fun."
Sony, by the end of all things, is a technology developer and not a game maker.
Many remembered how Nintendo delayed its N64 just so the flagship Mario64 was also ready. Some even speculated that they built their game systems around Miyamoto's games--who, by far, is hailed around the world as the best and most influential designer, hands down.
What more, I am disturbed by this loyalty, brand bonding. I liked the PS 1, but never had PS 2 until my brother gave it to me last week.
In this Information Age, how can one be so blind and misguided by the hype?

I agree with a lot of what you said. I'm a huge Playstation fan, but with next-gen already here I'm just not willing to wait longer for a PS3. I'm buying a 360. $600 is just more than I'm willing to spend for Metal Gear Solid (granted that $400 is a lot too). Microsoft has assimilated me I suppose.

Josh, your story sounds pretty similar to mine. I owned both a PS1 and PS2 and had become a bit of a Sony brand loyalist during that time. Initially I was excited about the PS3, but over time that excitement dissipated and my attention was caught by the 360.
I couldn't be more impressed by Microsoft's efforts, they have truly hit the mark with the 360.
