Featured Widget, Apple Style

2006 January 31 by Josh

Comment Icon 39 Comments

Don't know how long we'll be the featured widget, but for now our new ColorBurn widget is the new hotness at Apple.com. If you haven't taken the time to download our ColorBurn widget for OS X Tiger, now is the time. If the color palettes don't inspire you, the palette names will.

Also, if you downloaded the widget over the weekend, look for today's update (version 1.01) that improves some performance issues related to the daily refreshing of the palettes. If you decide to use one of the palettes in a project, let us know. We'd love to see what you cook up.

ColorBurn Widget 1.0

ColorBurn Icon Two things before we launch into the weekend. First, a big welcome to the newest Firewheeler, John Critz. John has been here a couple weeks now, but with the move and whatnot, we haven't had a moment to formally introduce him here yet. Hi John!

John will henceforth be known as "JC" since resident IconMaster John Marstall already took the email addy. Sorry dude. Anyhow... JC will be working a lot on some super-secret development projects in the hopper, and we're extremely grateful to have him here.

Second, JC's first uberslick contribution to the site is a handy OS X Dashboard Widget we named ColorBurn. ColorBurn rotates in a new color palette each day for your designer/web-geek pleasure. If you're looking for daily color inspiration from the guys who like orange, you've found it. For now, you'll need Mac OS X 10.4, but a Yahoo! Widget version is on the way as well. Be sure and let us know what you think.

Sparks and Plugs

Comment Icon 77 Comments

Those who subscribe to our RSS feeds know that we run two types of posts on our blog. The first, Sparks, are usually longer in content and generally have open commenting. The second, Plugs, are mostly one-liners with links off-site and no comments.

We run both types of posts through the same RSS, and oftentimes I feel like this probably makes it difficult to notice the difference between the two. So I though we'd ask... what would you, reader, think of two RSS feeds? One for the Sparks... One for the Plugs?

Firewheel Design 5.0

2006 January 19 by Josh

A new office to clutter up This is actually a couple days past due, but as of January 10, Firewheel Design is celebrating its 5th birthday. We're big into stretching out the celebration though, and we're okay with the late post.

In addition to the big 5.0, we're totally thrilled to be moved into our new diggs in Southlake Town Square. It's still a bit messy here, and the Mouly has not yet been returned to the walls. All the same, we're enjoying the new locale. We'll post a few photos in the days to come. Until then, we'd like to thank all of our clients, customers, friends, and colleagues who have truly made Firewheel what it is today. The last five years have been a ride, and we're looking forward to what lies ahead. We wouldn't be here without you.

The Business of Entertainment

2006 January 19 by Josh

Years ago the airline industry mopped up shop with the rail industry as rail companies failed to realize their business was transportation, not trains. Now, the same thing may be happening to the theatre industry. Mark Cuban asks, what business are theatres in?

As digital delivery becomes more prevalent, we'll see more and more independent films released directly to the public for their first run via services like iTunes. But major studios and theatres are loathe to see this happen. This is their cash cow, supposedly. But is it really? Within five years, I believe the entertainment industry (music, TV, and motion pictures included) will be turned on its head. And the companies that look to meet the desires of everyday people faster, instead of trying to hedge their profits with old-school business models, will rise to the top. Where do you think entertainment will go?

A music video that serves as a history lesson, of sorts, of one of the more infamous episodes during the golden age of Atari. Confidentially, I actually enjoyed the game.

Did you know that there are lyrics for the original Star Trek television series theme? It's a fascinating story, and it reveals that Gene Roddenberry could be a real rat. It also reveals that the lyrics are really bad. They don't seem so bad, however, when you hear them sung as beautifully as this. (Performed by Project: Pimento ... and the first voice you hear is not a voice at all but a theremin. Spacey!)

Madagascar was a very crummy animated film, but the reprise of its flightless stars in A Christmas Caper (which preceeded the Wallace & Gromit flick in theaters) is very amusing. I think we both realize that its appearance on the web is not studio-approved, but you need to see the peppermints!
