Blinksailing

2005 June 30 by Josh

For those curious about the progress of things, Blinksale—the easiest way to send invoices online—will begin its private beta in the next few days. The functionality of the 1.0 release is nearly complete, and we're working on squashing display bugs and defensive design considerations. What does this mean for you?

Well, it means that the public release is only weeks away. So close in fact, that we'll actually be leaking an official launch date soon. If you're not one of the hundreds upon hundreds who have signed up for the Blinksale Update list, we suggest you drop your email in the hat.

Say Hello to Blinksale

2005 June 20 by Josh

After several months of progress in and between client projects, Firewheel Design is about to unveil Blinksale, quite possibly the easiest way to create, manage, and send invoices online.

After 4 years of using one of those off-the-shelf business finance applications to bill our clients, we decided there had to be a better way to send invoices, follow up on late payments, and send our thanks when a payment was made. Ugly PDFs, missing attachments, and time-eating follow-up was a thorn in our side. Sadly, after extensive searching, we couldn't find that "better way." So we decided to create the way it ourself.

Blinksale is the result. It's launch is coming soon. Hit the list, and be one of the first to know when the app has launched.

IconBuffet Wonderland

2005 June 2 by Josh

The pixel artists have been very busy over the last six weeks, and if you've never checked out IconBuffet, there has never been a better time than now. With two new collections today, and two more on the way in the not-too-distant future, its a good time to see what the fuss is about.

First, we travel to Scandinavia, where our new Helsinki collection is crafted with clean lines and bold colors. The Helsinki collection contains 64 icons, three sizes, and a ton of formats for your application design pleasure.

Next we travel to Saint Louis, where the Grand Boulevard-inspired Tower Grove CMS adds 74 miniature icons to our standard Tower Grove collection. These icons are built specifically for web-based content management systems, and come in both 16x16 and the ultra-small 12x12 size.

Finally, in case you've missed it, our wonderful SOHO collection, featuring 10 icons in a plethora of colors, sizes, and formats is a great way to see what IconBuffet is all about. For a limited time, our SOHO collection is on sale for $5 (yes, five dollars... that's less than two lattés, folks).

June's Plugs

In other album cover news, Franz Ferdinand will not be giving their albums a title. Ever. Evidently we'll rely on the the Franz paint-by-number kit to determine what album we've just bought. What will those cool kiddies think of next? Actually, this is pretty darn cool.

Researchers on the Mekong River in Thailand catch the world's largest freshwater fish, a 640-some-odd pound catfish. The article says something about their research being used to promote awareness of endagered species and such. I hope he wasn't the last one, cos... he died after they caught him. Way to go, fellas.

The 1970s scifi TV show Space: 1999 was in no way of the same caliber as its predecessor Star Trek, but it was a lot funkier. Watch this clip (from an Italian fan page) to see what I mean, and peruse these soundtrack selections to hear what I mean.

Julian Beever can trompe de'l'oeil like no other. Want to cut a hole in your sidewalk? Or create an oversized Vaio out of thin air? Julian Beever can help. Porthole into an arctic realm? Instant sidewalk refreshment? All in a day's work.

And yes, every one of those was drawn on a flat, concrete surface. Now, can Mr. Beever make it possible for me to be in two places at once? I'm thinking he might just pull it off.

Raymond Loewy, the industrial design legend, came up in a conversation yesterday between John and myself, and it got me wondering whether there's an official site for him. There is, but the design of it just doesn't do the man justice. So I moved right along and enjoyed the visual fruits of a Google image search as well as brief but brilliant audio recording.

The folks over at Threadless recently launched Naked & Angry, a new clothing site geared towards high-end fashion (as opposed to t-shirts). They're taking new submissions for pattern designs, and collectively we've submitted a handful.

If you're not familiar with the process, the general public votes on their favorite patterns, and the top rated patterns are turned into textiles to be used on ties, socks, and all that jazz. We think ours are pretty slick. Get on over and vote for your favorite Firewheel designs: Pixel Rain September, Pixel Rain January, Popukafka, Pinapple Acid, Pookla Surf, Poolka Olive, Poolka Berry, and Dressed in Yellow.

We get asked a lot about the tools we use for creating icons. For the most part, they're pretty much the same tools every graphic designer uses, with a few extras thrown in for fun. If you're interested in learning more, I've posted a detailed list at Yellowlane. Enjoy!

"For 20 years, Rini Templeton made drawings of activists in the United States, Mexico and Central America while she joined them in their meetings, demonstrations, picket lines and other actions for social justice. She called her bold black-and-white images "xerox art" because activists and organizers could copy them easily for use in their banners, signs, leaflets, newsletters, even T-shirts, whenever needed."
