Eat Your Greens, They'll Make You Strong

Our studio has always been known for bright colors. Before the orange and black, it was purple and black. Marcel Mouly is probably my favorite living artist. What can you say?

Last fall we started working a certain green into the design of our site. Some people loved it. Some hated it. We believe it went well with the orange. So when the time came to design Blinksale, we decided to key off of that green (invoices, money, green, get it?). And thus far, the vast majority has loved the green.

But the color has its haters. Yesterday, the lime backlash began with Eric Meyer. We love Eric and his books. His commentary left us in stitches though:

On the other hand, the visual design of Blinksale totally hurts my eyes. Those are some amazing shades of green, boys. I really wish they didn’t clash in quite that way.

Well, the green's here to stay. Although perhaps down the road we'll issue an "Eric Meyer Collector's Edition" stylesheet mod. We'll see. (Argh! My eyes!)

Jon says

Oh well, tut-tut...

Awhile back, right as X&Y was coming out, the BBC was talking to Jonny Buckland about Coldplay finally having reached the top of the music world. And Jonny says, "Not really," and recounts how Radiohead and Oasis have talked down to Coldplay in public interviews, TV, etc., calling their music bland and "lifestyle music," the ultimate insult to a true rock'n'roll band.

So Jonny mentions this as a huge failure to him, and the interviewer replies with a recounting of records sold and stadiums packed, all signals of the bands incredible success. Jonny, though, points out that Radiohead and Oasis have long been his heroes, even before he was in a band. And his final quote seemed quite appropriate for the venerable Eric Meyer's comments:

"You know, there are many things in life you love, and some of them love you back. This is one of those things that doesn't."

Jonathan says

I don't understand his comments...you can pick the color template you want anyway. Thats like saying you don't like the iPod mini in blue so you won't get one...then buy a silver or a pink one. I am one of Eric's biggest fans but he is wrong here.

Gavin says

What catches my attention here, the colours aren't monotone in shade, which means one might say they could clash; but the consistancy of their use and proportionality to one another create a playful atmosphere. Which I happen to really like. Thanks guys!

I like the Blinksale site. I am a huge fan of the bright colors, and I consider bright colors a kind of Firewheel trademark anyway. Good job on the design. BTW - take a look at the comments on Meyer's Blinksale post. Hysterical. :-)
