It's been interesting to watch the traditional design community in the last few years. My background is in traditional print design, but about five years ago I started migrating to more and more digital, web, and interactive design. A few years we stopped doing print design here at Firewheel except for very special exceptions. All the same, all this time, I've kept some loose ties to that traditional design world. Until now.
As 2005 comes to an end and we're closing out our books, I've taken a look back to see if there are expenses that we laid out this year that offered little in return. While the findings were in some ways shocking, you could really see this train coming a long time ago. It's time to clean house.
Gone are our subscriptions to many traditional print magazines, namely HOW and Step. I simply don't look at them anymore. They arrive in the mail and go on the shelf. It's not that they're bad publications, I'm just not interested in the subject matter anymore. I don't need paper samples, I don't design business cards, and frankly I get most of my design related news on the web now. And as you can see, neither HOW or Step are doing a whole lot to keep you coming to their websites. Why would I read about Coudal in a magazine, when I can get the daily dose for free at coudal.com?
I am, however, still keeping CommArts. It has less ads, and is a justifiable decoration expense as the white cover stock always looks wonderful on the shelf. It reflects bad on the designer if you're missing a numbered issue. Kinda like National Geographic. For design geeks. But I digress.
Also gone is my membership to AIGA (gasp!). Don't get me wrong. I think AIGA is a great organization. One that benefits many designers. While I'll miss the Design Annual, I don't have much time to enjoy it these days, and I haven't been to an AIGA meeting in uh, I don't know how long. Gone also is my subscription to Creative Business, another great publication that I simply no longer need. In another life I'd heartily recommend any of these publications and organizations.
But times have changed. We're a digital design firm the specializes in a lot of services that you'll never ever hear about in traditional design circles. The most you'll ever see about icon design in a publication like HOW is a brief interview with Susan Kare, who is still discussing the work for Apple she did 20 years ago. Articles about interactive design focus on huge Flash-based projects that mean nothing to a design studio focused on web standards. And any mention of blogs comes in the form of a token page or three with an "aren't these quaint?" sort of tone.
My trade publications are now online in the form of sites like Authentic Boredom, SimpleBits, and Signal vs Noise. My design community is now online as well, and groups like Refresh Dallas are filling in where AIGA left off. It would be interesting to know how many subscriptions traditional design publications have lost now due to the web, or if AIGA is taking a hit with the lines between technology, development, and design blurring ever more on the web.

Since discovering blogs all those years ago, I've felt guilty for not keeping up with the various mags. Less so as time passed. These days, I pretty much leave them on the newsstand once I'm done browsing. Not much a magazine can do to compete with the freshness of an RSS feed.
But, at the same time, there's still a barrier when it comes to imagery. Idly flipping through a magazine is a way different experience than sifting through a textual RSS feed. Much as we love Coudal, when I have to manually process the description of a work before I click through and just see it, it's less likely that I will. You just can't substitute the immediate availability of four-colour glossy stock with black and white text without losing something in the process.

Magazines haven't been a good resource for the best interactive design work in quite a few years, in my opinion. The stuff they showcase is generally work done for specialty brands of huge clients like Nike or Reebok. They'll only show work that presents a visual bombardment of color and motion, which is really not representative of the best work out there, and it's certainly not representative of the type of work that the average client seeks out.
And there's no point in looking at multiple magazines anymore, because most of them are running the same content anyway. I think is was Print and Communication Arts that both ran a "green design" issue a few months back, in the same month. And the same work appears from the same clients across many of these magazines, sometimes even within multiple issues of the same magazine. I don't want to spend money on X Magazine to see the same work from ABC Design Firm that I just saw in Y Magazine. And I especially don't want to see that website done by ABC Design Firm in a regular issue of X Magazine and then again in their Interactive Design Annual. Some of those annuals go for $30+ on the newsstand, and yet their full of far too much re-used content.

Agreed. Comm Arts and Print are the only two graphic design magazines I subscribe to. I honestly don't like Comm Arts that much -- it always feels cold to me -- but I keep it around anyway. Print on the other hand has evolved over the past year into a very enjoyable magazine. It crackles with energy.
I seem to draw more inspiration though from non-design magazines. Dwell, Metropolitan Home, Res, and Believer all sit on my night stand. I also receive the Harvard Design Magazine, which comes out maybe four times a year, and is very architecture / environmental design driven, but is a fascinating, heady read.

Dwell has displaced many a design mag here as well as Metropolis, which is a bit more industrial than Dwell, but a wonderful read. I'll have to glance into Print. I haven't looked at it in years. It will be interesting to see if some traditional design magazines make steps to grow with the times, or if they'll slowly lose membership as more designers jump to the web.

I imagine that these "hard" magazines are losing revenue quickly. What I find a bit odd is that, even though designers are increasingly moving to digital endeavors, there is a complete dearth of "hard" magazines for the digital creative. I don't mind entirely. As noted, blogs, online zines like ALA and group blogs like Speak Up! are doing their darndest to keep everyone in some kind of loop.
I guess I wonder if we're missing out on important content what with print subscriptions being less important. I, too, have started phasing out my commitment to the above mentioned magazines and many others, in part, as you noted, because they are editorially missing their target audiences.

Couldn't agree more about Dwell and Metropolis filling the inspirational void left by traditional design mags. I also second your feelings about AIGA, which in my experience is still living in the mid-late nineties when it comes to where design+tech reality is today. Great people, great designers, just not fully in-touch with where the design market is or could be.

On the contrary, Print design will never go out of fashion. What's interesting is that I have the opposite path of experience, starting out with digital design and transitioning more over to print. It's most likely the industry that I work in (Financial Services), but I don't ever truely seeing it go out of it's usefullness. Now back onto topic: Design magazines/trade publications have never really done justice in showcasing great design. I've always felt that Print/CommArts/AdAge/etc focus more on a specific niche than on the general design scene, and unfortunately that business model would work better for them because of the whole fresh blood thing. If I were a basic to mid level graphic designer, I'd most likely take a glance ad one spread in these mags and instantly when I saw Nike or Gatorade, I'd think that the reputation of the company that's printing this magazine is very high, and I could easily fall for the whole brand name fasade. We all know that Nike/Reebok/Gatorade/Sony/etc fail to exhibit the best design, but we're in the minority here, and the same problem applies itself to many of the design communities around (eg AIGA). I've always had a problem with AIGA for the same reasons you all did (all-be-it more political than anything), and it's the writing on the wall that people actually think that the pinnacle of design is exhibited in such areas.
Now to play devil's advocate. It's not really an industry problem in design as much as it is a corporate problem. These magazines showcase where corporations are with design, and not necesarily the artisans of the trade. By doing so, a rolling stone is created where all corporations desire a look and feel much like their neighbor's, and are less and less willing to relinquish creative control to us.
As a quick question, where exactly is the design market?

Good comments by all, but I think it's important for someone to point out the shortcomings of the "tech" age, mostly due to the loss of personal contact and "manners" in general. (How many times have we all avoided a call or meeting by simply hiding behind an email?) I think it's safe to say, given the articles we've all read, that less and less is pen hitting paper and more and more emails fill the void. There's something to the tactile and emotional response that these things give to both the sender and the receiver. The internet and email are never going to be anything but cold means of communication which cannot fully replace the alternatives.
The importance in organizations like AIGA also lie in the opportunity for personal interaction nearly as much as the design it represents. Although chapters in many cities are not as strong as they could be, nor have the events that they should, there is a tremendous opportunity to remove yourself from your box and sit in someone else's for a while. The chance to vent, learn, network, and stimulate your design direction are rarely found through an internet based forum, and even if they are, there's something to be said about face-to-face contact.
