Alright, here's a bit of an informal survey for you. As you may know, we do quite a bit of mobile device UI design here at Firewheel, primarily revolving around downloadable Java applications for mobile phones.
Currently, statistics tell us that most mobile phone owners in the United States use their mobile phone as a phone, but not much else. Yet. Ringtones and games are gaining a lot of traction, and downloadable applications are catching on as well. But we wonder how long it will be before mass-market America catches on that you can use your phone for more than just yappin'.
What do you do with your phone? Text message? Email? Play games? Listen to music? Take photos? Buy movie tickets?
And, if you don't use your phone for extra services such as those, why not? Is this user-experience bad? Is the phone too complicated? Service a disaster? We'd like to know...

Josh S says
I only use my phone for emergencies. It sits on my bedroom dresser turned off most of the time. When I have it on me while turned on for some stupid reason, it is always turned to vibrate.
If I feel particularly bored and I have it with me, I might play a game of chess on it--but I haven't done that for at least six months.
The reason? I don't want everyone to be able to ahold of me all the time. And I don't want to annoy everyone around me talking on it.
Oh, and if anyone knows of a Nextel-Walkie-Talkie-Wannabe zapper, please let me know about it. :)
Corey says
I use the phone for calls and the occasional game of Tetris. If I had a straight USB cable connection to my Mac I'd be snapping photos too -- can't stand having to carry a camera and a phone separately. Contemplating getting a new one that does email for blog postings...
PDX Rocket says
Phone only, plain and simple. The games are lame, costly, and the phone is hard to use for a controller on anything decent. Don't even get me started on the ringtones, I prefer only to hear it, not dance to it.
Waylon says
A phone is a communication device. That said, I use it for:
1. Phone calls
2. Text messages
That's it.
Ian Brown says
Well, I'm a Brit, so it's kind of pointless me doing this, but I will all the same.
I use my mobile for:
Phone calls
Texts
Photos
Games
Radio
and a little bit of browsing.
Adel says
I've asked this question myself quite sometime back. Interestingly, apart from what I've mentioned in there, I've begun to use the phone regularly to update my daily expenses worksheet and get RSS feeds using GPRS.
Miko says
My phone has nice interface GUI and user experience. When I use my phone— If, ever —all I do is talk and txt once in a while.
I like to customize my phone, and having a fast way to meddle with my settings is great. my phone at least allows for quick navigation with good icons and items listed in the right spot.
Clint says
I use my phone for calling and text messaging. I don't have a landline, so my phone gets quite the workout. If I had a better phone (Razor?) then I'm sure I would browse and use the camera and video features.
Jon says
What I would like to use my phone for is:
PSP
8MP camera
Checkin' da, checkin' da, checkin' da e-mail
iPod
I suppose I could move to South Korea, but then this might be a problem. So, I guess I'll just have to wait.
Josh Williams says
Side question for those reading comments... Does your phone's UI suck or does it rock? And what phone are you using?
Ian Brown says
My phone has an awful, truely awful UI. I'm using a Nokia 5140. The browser is awful, it's hard to basically do anything with it.
It's the worst phone I've had.
Tumble says
My Motorola V600 was supposed to be an impressive piece of technology. It is not. It's interface is clunky, slow, and buggy. It's talk quality is good, but I can't imagine trying to use it for anything other than phone conversations. The browser is disappointing, and the predictive text is unimpressive. It's made me want to seek out a much simpler phone, and has made me miss the wonderful, reliable, and bombproof Nokias from the 90's.
Miko says
My phone is a Verizon Wireless LG vx6100. From what I've seen, this phone's UI (graphical & person-friendly) is top notch.
I haven't used the mobile browser since I haven't come across a situation to use it; otherwise it proves to be a well rounded phone.
Personally, I like the phone and have a good service plan -- but that's the only reason I need the phone, to call. Anything else can be achieved with my computer or iPod. I'm not in a metropolitan are where I would think having a mobile internet would be handy (Checking for clubs/nearest restaurants etc).
Plus, having all those nifty extras are expensive. That's the bottom line for me. Why would I want to browse Yahoo on my phone if it's cheaper/faster on the computer?
Gavin McFarland says
This is something I'm glad people are asking about, because I think that investment into "what mobile phones should be designed to do" really needs re-organising.
You see the problem for me, and I'm sure a lot of others is that I don't like paying wads of money for features of a phone I'm barely going to use, but I still want a phone that's of a high standard in what I want it to do.
These are the main things I used to use my phone for when I had a Samsung E800
Phone calls
Text messages, (not photo messages)
Storing phone numbers
This is what I use my phone for now that I have a Sony Ericcson K750i
Phone calls
Text messages, (not photo messages)
Storing contact details, phone numbers, addresses, emails, web presences, birth days, and other info (and syncing it with my computer)
Taking snap shots
Sometimes checking my email
That's it really, an improvement on what I actually use it for compared to my old Samsung. I think one is that I have more control over those features that did matter to me, and the UI is a lot better. Not forgetting it has a USB connection, Bluetooth, and IR.
However there are some things i'd like to use my phone for more often...
Reminders, calendar (i don't use these much at the moment because the user inter face and the way it is integrated into the ergonomics of the phone prevent the feature from being anything that's productive)
Checking my email more often
Browsing the web
Managing my phone expenditures (rather than having to call a sales representative)
Listening to my music/radio
Messaging (msn, yahoo, aim....)
And all of these features I'd like to be able to do without having to either surf miles of web pages, or call a call centre to find out how you configure it.
But then again, its important that it does all the little things as well like...
Display the time
Have a calculator
Set alarms
There are two things that really bother me about some features that are available to us on mobile phones and they are.
1. Photo messaging, web browsing, and sending/recieving emails:
To send a picture to a friend as a sms just gets expensive.
To browse the web is to put it frankly pointless for me at the moment. I never find what I'm looking for, either because the phone can't display the site, or the site isn't made to display on the phone. At what is available to me as a feature on a phone, I'm not yet prepared to pay for it, until it gets better.
To send an email with the technology that is available on a phone is useful in it's own ways, but again limited. And again, expensive.
2. The user interface, most look ugly, out-date, hard to understand, some a little tacky, and most of all don't seem to corrospond in a ergonomic way.
If someone could apply an "Apple" philosophy to a mobile phone. Something with a design that doesn't date, ergonomic in both product shape and user interface, durable, intuitive features, something that's cross compatible with both a range of computers and software, attention to detail, professional icons, sync-able, including my emails, and bookmarks.
Then I'd be in heaven.
Tumble says
At the very top of the list, I want "Responsive". I just want things to happen quickly. I hate that on my phone (v600) everything is very laggy. I would prefer black and white lcd screen as long as I never have to *wait* for something to happen after I press a key.
Clint says
My phone is an LG - an older Sprint model. And it does suck.
Beth says
I use my phone mostly for talking and for text messaging. There are a lot of additional services available on my phone (the Nokia 3300), even an mp3 player. Unfortunately the user interface on this phone is so difficult to navigate I barely even want to use the phone for talking.
Accessing the internet on this thing requires one to jump through hoops, and my service provider's data plans practically cost your firstborn child.
I've sworn off Nokia phones, and am now leery of any 'all in one' device. Also, even though I originally purchased this phone for its advertised MP3 capabilities, I bought an iPod to use instead because I would rather carry around extra junk than deal with all that hassle. I don't want to have to go through more than 2 screens to use 'basic' functionality.
Nokia could take a cue from the iPod's easy to use interface. I don't have to go through more than 3 screens for anything, and I can do it all with just my thumb, barely even looking at the screen.
Steven Ametjan says
I use my phone for a lot of different things. I don't really talk on it all that much, but I send some where in the range of 500-1000 text messages a month. I also use it for the occasional checking of the email, and photos. I have a Motorola v3 so I don't have a lot of room for me to store mp3s, but I do find myself pulling my phone out for a game of golf every now and then.
I think the thing that is keeping us from using the phone for more is how slowly the American market adopts the new mobile technology, but I feel most of that is due to the FCC. Also, we don't have any providers that offer stand-out services that help differentiate them from the others... they all have lack luster quality, or technology. For instance, Verizon has superb quality, but they are using CDMA which isn't highly supported in the global marketplace. Cingular/AT&T, and T-Mobile are using GSM, but because of the restrictions that the FCC places on which frequencies can be used, they are forced to either have cell towers so close together that the cost becomes too much, or simply have brown areas where you are lucky to get coverage.
Jon says
Anybody out there have the Siemens S66?
Sam Rae says
I use my phone as a phone - calls and TXT. If I wanted to play games, I'd buy and XBox. If I want to surf the web, I'll use my PC. If I could get a combo PDA/phone with a decent sized screen that wasn't too expensive, I'd probably use it for checking email as well.
Miko says
It seems that many people --at least posting here-- only use mobiles for calls, TXT or the occasional game.
I think that phone companies know this, and only offer web browsing, cameraphone or downloadable ringtones for some that want it (Or for those who really, really need it).
It looks more like the "feature war." Non-savvy customers who assume one provider is better than the other because it has X more features.
Having more devices 'All in One' is not such a good idea, I think. If your MP3-browser-email-camera phone breaks, your can't use either one of them. I prefer to have seperate items (albeit less pocket space).
So, now, my vote for a new phone purchase would be ease of use. Can I get to that menu fast & efficiently? Do I have to click more? Can I customize beyond the darn factory preset? If all it does is a few things and does it well, then I'm sold.
Of course if all the wireless providers are making money -and they seem to know what they're doing- then who's complaining?

Hoodia Gordonii is an established, natural weight-loss medicine that many people insist for fast and safe weight loss. Gordonii Pills come in many sizes and forms. Many diet pills manufacturers just mix Hoodia to their already junk packed pills. Others offer pure Hoodia in an amount ranging from 400 mg or 750 mg and up.
How Much Should You Take To Get Your Desired Weight Loss Results?
First of all, you have to confirm that the manufacturers you are buying from actually put the stated dosage of Hoodia extracts in their pills. With the ever-increasing demand for this wonder appetite-suppressant, there are numerous dishonest companies that are using fake Hoodia, packing products or not putting the stated amount of Hoodia in their pills. So make sure you by from a trusted company that also displays their C.I.T.E.S. certificate and lab tests.
It is believed that an ideal dosage will be just 500 mg of Hoodia Gordonii a day to see appetite-suppressant results. This much amount of Hoodia promises you a higher possibility of successful results. Depending on your body size, composition, health, weight, etc, you may need a little more or less. A good rule of thumb is to start slow and see how you feel. To start with you may take 400 mg of Hoodia pill before meals thrice a day. If you wont see results you can step up to an amount of 750 mg per day. Remember to give yourself a couple of days to see results.
Why 500 mg?
That seems to be the dosage where most people have the most success results. It's also the most popular Gordonii dosage with buyers. With many people finding they get outstanding appetite-suppressing results by taking minimum 500 milligram of Hoodia, many manufacturers are coming out with a ‘750 Hoodia’ pill but this is not necessary. But the last thing is to make sure to listen to your body, consult your doctor and take Hoodia with a rational diet and exercise program for maximum weight loss results.
