The Firewheel Pad

2005 April 27 by Josh

We're finally getting settled in to the point where I'm cool with posting office shots (neat freak that I am... yeah, right). Now you'll have a bit of an idea of what the joint looks like here. We wish we had some better windows so we could do the frosty-vinyl-logo-thing, but you can't have all your wishes granted, now can you?

Also, if you want to see close-ups of the photos on our walls, they're here.

Pixel Trivia Winners!

2005 April 22 by Josh

Big props to Jeff French, whose entry's subject line appropriately proclaimed "iPod Me". Out of over a hundres entries, Jeff was the first to submit the correct answer to every question (and some of them turned out to be stumpers). He'll be receiving a sweet new iPod shuffle and some goodies from IconBuffet.

Congratulations also go to Sandor Weisz and John Peele who were our runners-up. We also decided to give a third-runner up prize to a man known simply as Alex—whose answers came in right before John's. Alex submitted all the correct answers including the names of the orginal Mac system fonts before they were renamed after larger cities. All three will also receive stock icon collections from IconBuffet

A big thanks to all who participated. We'll be doing it again soon, so watch your inboxes.

April's Plugs

So silly, yet so sad. Brought to you by the same fellow responsible for a wonderfully odd series of Elvis paintings.

Ah, the handheld memories! Seeing Mattel's tiny Dungeons & Dragons Computer Fantasy Game moved me. Honest.

Nine Inch Nails versus Ray Parker, Jr.? Yes. Normally I don't care for Mr. Reznor, but bustin' makes me feel good.

Incredible set, character and hardware design from concept art director Feng Zhu. This is really imaginative stuff, and it's immaculately executed in a variety of physical and digital media.

I had heard that the collaboration between Disney and Pixar was coming to an end, so that causes me to wonder what digital animation outfit is responsible for this flick. If, of course, the movie is as entertaining as its trailer then I suppose it matters not.

For those of you who spend a large portion of your day at a computer (as do I), Gwangi offers a rotating collection of radio drama for your listening pleasure - both golden age stuff and some current BBC productions.

From the department of "Combinations Mother Nature never intended—but should have" we bring you Les Miserables: The Fighting Game. (Larger screenshots available here.) Play as Valjean, Javert, Eponine, the Thenardiers, or even "RoboJean" and try to best your opponents in a variety of 19th-century French locales.

This is purely a labor of love from an artist/programmer who is very fond of both the musical and the Street Fighter genre of games. While I can't speak to the quality of the gameplay, the concept alone merits a "You've got chocolate in my peanut butter" award in my book.

Enter a word, any word, into amaztype and it becomes a collage constructed of product images from one of Amazon's four global stores. Sounds stupid on the surface but turns out to be rather interesting.

While hanging out at the Firewheel Design global headquarters two weeks ago, John (aka Professor of Pixels) related to me a silly something he had once seen on the web. It was a School House Rock flavored Flash-based animation which touted the merits of a new storage technology, and, whaddaya know, here it is.

The dual disc is the record industry's latest attempt to discourage music swapping by offering an audio CD packed with a lot of extra DVD-accessed goodies. Though there only a little over 100 dual disc albums on the market, experts say that Bruce Springsteen's new release will push the format into the mainstream. Not for me. Blech!

Last night I finally watched Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (for some reason it's taken me years to get around to viewing it). This morning, the day after, I'm enjoying this lavish fan site as well as this collection of then and now San Francisco locale shots from the film.

Should we commend Napoleon Dynamite for making the State of Idaho look sweet? Idaho's House of Representatives says, "Heck yes!" Via the Moll.

The pixel wranglers are busier than ever, and today is no exception. Without further ado, we're excited to release our latest stock icon collection, Deep Ellum. Inspired by Dallas' multicultural jazz-district, the Deep Ellum collection includes 64 gorgeous icons each in three color themes.

In addition to vivid color, jet black and frosty blue variations are also included. These are extremely handy when you'd like to customize the color yourself to match a specific project. If you haven't had a look at IconBuffet lately, we'd kindly suggest you get movin'.

Back in the earliest days of the Atari 2600 video game system, Sears released the very same console and various game cartridges with their own distinct packaging. 1000 bonus points if you came name the game which was available exclusively for the Tele-Games console.

Anomalous motion illusions that will make you say Wow! and Ouch! Heed Akiyoshi's advice: "Should you feel dizzy, you had better leave this page immediately."

Has it anything at all to do with cinema as art? Nope. It's all about about the cash.

I've had bitmaps on the brain today, so, reminiscing, here is a retro bitmap assemblage that will forever be one of my faves.

Every now and then we're blessed with a really great small project. Such is the case with the new icon for Dominey's SlideShowPro. You can check out the new icon design here and if you haven't checked out the killer Flash plug-in itself, you can do that here.

In honor of the vector app which has, after all these years, finally made it to the top of the heap (see Josh's post below), here's the guy who illustrated the back of the box.

These Jimmy Swaggart record album covers are surprisingly groovy!

Firewheel Design will be holding a ceremonial Macromedia Freehand box burning this weekend in light of the news. All in all, this is probably a happy thing. Flash is the only Macromedia app we run here any more, and now it will inherit Adobe's tabbed toolboxes without a lawsuit. Swell.

By no means is it my intention to discourage you from trying your hand at nabbing a shuffly iPod (see below), but I really must insist that you listen responsibly.

A post at SVN regarding self-published books brought to mind a favorite typographer, Doyald Young. I had the privilege to hear Doyald speak a while back at an AIGA event here in Dallas. Surprisingly, even in today's web-influenced design society, you can learn a ton from his old-school technique. His two books are simply worth their weight in gold to any designer concerned with typography (and they're pretty darn heavy).

Mark Cuban believes the days of your desktop are numbered. Save some innovative hardware products from companies like Apple, I'm inclined to agree. Now where is my rocket car?

Things are heating up in Texas, and we've called in the Calvary. Well, actually, we've called in one of the finest pixel wranglers to walk the West (or anywhere, for that matter). Firewheel Design is pleased to extend the warmest welcome to Brian Brasher, our newest designer extraordinaire. Brian will be joining us from Birmingham, Alabama, and we can't tell you how thrilled we are to have him on the team. Now with Firewheelers in Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Birmingham we're going to have to get some "Hard Rock" style t-shirts made. Not exactly Manhattan, it is?

Distributed quarterly, Design In-Flight is a wonderful PDF-based design publication for graphic designers and web designers. We just downloaded our April issue and we're pleasantly surprised to find our own IconBuffet mentioned on Page 21. If you're not a subscriber, the magazine is well worth the $3 an issue. It's full of quality content and not laden down with ads (or all the tab-in paper samples that totally ruin HOW for me).

Another one of our SXSW favorites (and not surprisingly awarded Best of Show), Made in MTL redefines our idea of a travel site. We'll forgive the rich Flash site for taking over our cinema display simply because the visuals are so darn cool. I'm ready to pack my bags and book my flight north right now.
